Overview

Why do people make the decisions they do — even when those decisions aren't in their best interest? And what can organizations do about it?

Behavioural Insights (BI) draws on psychology, economics, and the decision sciences to answer those questions. By understanding how people actually think and behave — rather than how we assume they should — BI gives organizations the tools to design smarter programs, policies, and products that create meaningful, lasting change for consumers, citizens, and employees.

The UBC Sauder Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights is the only BI certificate program in Canada. This rigorous, 9-month program combines in-depth coursework with a hands-on capstone project, giving you both the theoretical grounding and the applied experience to become a confident BI practitioner. Whether you work in government, healthcare, non-profit, or the private sector, this program will fundamentally change the way you approach problems — and the results you're able to achieve.

Not sure if the full certificate is right for you? Start with our standalone prerequisite course, Fundamentals of Behavioural Insights — a 3-week introduction to BI concepts, research design, and ethics that you can take independently or as your first step toward the certificate.

The UBC Sauder Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights is designed for working professionals who want to create positive, evidence-based change — in organizations, communities, or policy environments. It is ideal for:

  • Public sector professionals in government, policy, or public administration who want to design and evaluate more effective programs and services using BI principles
  • Healthcare, social services, and non-profit professionals looking to apply behavioural science to improve outcomes for clients, patients, or communities
  • HR professionals and organizational leaders seeking evidence-based tools to drive positive behaviour change among employees and across organizational culture
  • Marketing, communications, and UX professionals who want to go beyond intuition and design interventions grounded in how people actually make decisions
  • Researchers, analysts, and program evaluators who want to add rigorous experimental methods — including randomized controlled trials — to their professional toolkit
  • Anyone working at the intersection of policy, innovation, and people who wants a more systematic, scientific approach to understanding and changing behaviour

Past students have come from backgrounds spanning business, social sciences, science and engineering, arts and humanities, and beyond — representing government at all levels, academia, the private sector, and the non-profit sector. The program is complementary to existing training in project management, change management, business analysis, innovation, lean, and agile methodologies.

No prior experience in behavioural science is required. The prerequisite course, Fundamentals of Behavioural Insights, provides all the foundational knowledge needed to enter the certificate program.

When your employees complete the UBC Sauder Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights, your organization gains practitioners equipped to:

Icon 2

Design more effective programs, policies, and products by applying evidence-based behavioural strategies that account for how people actually make decisions — not how we assume they do.

Icon 2

Evaluate what works — and what doesn't — by designing and conducting rigorous research, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs), to measure the real-world impact of organizational initiatives.

Icon 2

Reduce the cost of ineffective interventions by diagnosing the root behavioural causes of problems before designing solutions — avoiding costly guesswork

Icon 2

Drive behaviour change among employees, clients, and citizens using ethical, research-backed approaches grounded in choice architecture, nudging, and behavioural economics

Icon 2

Build internal BI capability that can be applied across functions — from HR and communications to marketing, policy design, and service delivery

Icon 2

Create a new specialized role — as one capstone project sponsor from BC's Residential Tenancy Branch noted, completing this program directly contributed to the creation of a new government classification: Behavioural Insights Specialist

Organizations across government, healthcare, financial services, higher education, and the non-profit sector have partnered with program students on capstone projects — and seen tangible results.

The Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights uses a competitive admissions process designed to support a high-quality, collaborative cohort experience.

To be considered, applicants must:
  • Hold an undergraduate degree, college diploma, and/or have multiple years of relevant work experience
  • Successfully complete the prerequisite course, Fundamentals of Behavioural Insights, prior to the program start (applications may be submitted before completing the course, provided it will be done by May 31, 2026)
  • Demonstrate strong written and spoken English proficiency

The Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights demonstrates the value of education in applied behavioural science by pulling together expertise from multiple areas and focusing it with a behavioural insights lens. It democratizes that knowledge by allowing more people, especially in the public sector, but also across all types of organizations, to get a base understanding of the value and potential of BI and how to apply it. Having sponsored both students and capstone projects, there is tremendous value in increasing organizational capacity in the knowledge of the potential that BI offers.

Graduates of UBC’s Advanced Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights (BI) will obtain knowledge in each step of the core BI research process, while at the same time conducting a BI project that runs in tandem with the certificate’s curriculum. This blending of theoretical education and real-world practical application,  ensures graduates leave the program with the skills of a BI practitioner. The program is extremely well designed, led by passionate instructors and smoothly delivered virtually. The Fundamentals of Behavioural Insights prerequisite course is great standalone introduction to BI and serves as an ideal way to discover for yourself if the full certificate program is right for you. As a market researcher, I've spent years understanding people's behaviour. This program gave me the tools to actually change it. The hands-on capstone project meant we weren't just learning theory, we were living it with a real client. The faculty were incredible, and I left with both a new skillset and a fundamentally different way of thinking about change. What stuck with me most is that instead of trying to change people (which is hard!), you learn to change the situation. Suddenly these massive, overwhelming challenges become a series of smaller, solvable design problems.
